Cooke U15s Girls Host Blitz with an Italian Flavour!

Club News

On 9th September, over 40 girls from local clubs and a touring side from Bergamo in Italy came together for a day of rugby!

Cooke RFC played hosts to girls from Larne RFC, Ballymena RFC, Virginia RFC and the Valcavallina Raptors in a 10-a-side tournament. The idea for the blitz came from local man Noel McCulla who had connections with the Bergamo based rugby club. He said “I contacted the best female rugby team in Ulster – Cooke RFC. I knew they would be able to organise a friendly for the Italian girls and give them an idea of what rugby in Ulster is all about.”

Girls youth convener, Helen McGhee organised the blitz involving Cooke RFC and the 3 other local clubs in what was to be a day of fun, rugby and the all important “third half” – food and friendly presentations in the clubhouse. Many thanks must go to Helen for organising the blitz and to Noel and the other coaches from the participating clubs who refereed, coached and encouraged the girls. We look forward to the return fixture in Italy later this year!
